Christina Koutras of Canada glided across the ice in arabesques and lunges, graceful arms in birdlike flutters as she skated her way to gold in the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games.
Her fluid skating won over the crowd at Qwest Arena in Downtown Boise, drawing them to their feet for a standing ovation. In that moment, it was hard to imagine that Koutras, 16, almost didn’t make it to the Games at all.
