
The Monowheel has never come across as the safest looking mode of transportation to me, but shrink them down so they’re small enough to wear on each foot and you’ve got my attention. That’s what a company called Inventist did with the Orbitwheels, which they were showing off at this year’s Toy Fair. Friends of the River this year brings back the California Rivers Festival, the popular annual event that has something for everyone: kayakers, whitewater boaters, fly fishermen, families interested in learning about California rivers, and anyone who wants to get involved in river conservation.
Held each year as the snow starts to melt and the rivers start to rise, the festival brings river enthusiasts together to have fun, as well as to learn more about the rivers they love and about Friends of the River’s work to protect rivers throughout the state.

FREESKIING has been credited with making skiing cool again — particularly among the junior set, which had been lured by the snowboard’s renegade appeal. Thanks to twin-tip skis, which are rounded and upturned on both ends, freeskiers can land on the snow facing forward or backward, making it possible to do the flashy jumps and daring tricks of the snowboard on ungroomed backcountry snow, as well as on the pipes and jumps of terrain parks.
