Kelly Slater’s competitive surfing career might be in its twilight, but Quiksilver made it clear it wants to hold on to its star athlete for as long as possible.

The Huntington Beach-based surfwear company announced today it has signed Slater, a nine-time world champion, to a five-year contract extension. Terms were not disclosed.

In a news release, Robert B. McKnight Jr., Quiksilver’s top executive, commented: “We couldn’t be more pleased than to continue our long-standing relationship with the greatest surfer the sport has ever known. Giovanni Carpitella has highlighted speed as the key to success ahead of the Grand Prix of the Sea in Turkey later this month. 

Experienced powerboater Carpitella replaces Giancarlo Cangiano as throttleman in the SNAV OSG boat with the latter missing the event as he is awaiting the arrival of his first child. 

Carpitella believes the calmer waters on the Bosphorus will require their Outerlimits boat to find extra pace should they harbour aspirations of maintaining their lead at the top of the Powerboat P1 World Championship Evolution-class standings.

VAIL, Colorado — Vail resident Kristin Williams wasn’t expecting huge crowds and an array of sporting events when she took her family to the Teva Mountain Games this year.

“The last time I went about five years ago, it was just a little kayaking event, and you hung out around the International Bridge,” she said. “I had no idea how big it was, and how many events there were.”

In fact, thousands athletes and spectators converged upon Vail Village during the four-day event to watch kayaking, climbing, biking, running and even dog-jumping competitions. THEY are charged with maintaining law and order on Singapore’s roads. So it will come as a surprise to many that the Traffic Police are the main sponsors for next month’s pro-am drift contest – an activity many associate with young daredevils.

Drifting is not all bad, says Deputy Superintendent of Police Soh Wan Khuan, referring to a sport in which the driver intentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction through turns.
