Backside flips, smith grind, inward heel flip, nada spin, activism. Which one of these doesn’t belong? If you ask 20-year-old skate activist Justin Marks, he would tell you these things go together as well as metal bolted to wood.
I’m about 10 minutes late meeting Marks in downtown San Francisco, but in the laid back way only a skater can pull off, he tells me not to trip when he picks me up. He is a redhead with freckles and a ginger beard growing around his chin, skinny – like most hardcore skaters. Roger Penske, known for his successful racing teams, in addition to being the nation’s second-largest auto dealer, has struck a tentative deal to buy the Saturn brand from General Motors. USA TODAY spoke with Penske on Sunday at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa.
Q: What’s the next step in your acquisition of Saturn?
A: The next step is to close the transaction, which we hope to do at the end of the third quarter. We’ll be dealing with GM on future product. Then we have the opportunity to source product from around the world as we go into future years. First, we’re putting an organization together and closing the transaction. Newquay in Cornwall, the laid-back and beach drenched capital of the British surf scene, will for the fifth year be hosting The Queen of the Surf – an all women’s surf day on Sunday 19th July in aid of Cancer Research UK.
With the stunning backdrop of Newquay’s famous surf spot, Fistral beach, the day will be a chance for women to learn the basics or improve their surfing technique with top instructors and whilst having fun will be able to give something back to such a worthwhile charity.
The ‘Queen of the Surf’ day is being organised by Hibiscus Surf School and sponsored by Sola UK who have kindly donated goody bags for each of the women attending to take away as a reward for their hard days surfing.
