Tiny Buell Motorcycle Co. has made some noise on the national sport bike racing circuit, and the company hopes to leverage the success into sales.

Sunday, for the third time in two weeks, a Wisconsin-made Buell sport bike won a national road race. The victory came against Japanese and European competitors that have dominated the field for decades.

The victories were the first for an American motorcycle manufacturer, in this bike category, in 37 years, according to Buell, based in East Troy and owned by Harley-Davidson Inc.

Despite the beliefs of many motorists, who tend to think every bicyclist who violates a traffic law is a reckless anarchist, most bike commuters — be they doctors, lawyers, plumbers, accountants, journalists, messengers or anarchists – use rolling stops because it’s what their bodies and nature demands.

In their essay “Why Bicyclists Hate Stop Signs,” University of California physics professor Joel Fajans and Access transportation journal editor Melanie Curry write that requiring cyclists to follow the same complete-stop rules as motorists defies science.

Yesterday we got out early to make the most of the early tide. Conditions looked good so we didn’t hang around at the timing hut but went straight to the top of the nautical mile course for another shot at the title. Just as we left the beach a strong gust came and whipped up the sand. Things settled and in short time we were ready for a run.

I felt good based on that run we had done a few days ago in stronger conditions. I was eager to replicate the start-up and peg Vestas Sailrocket along the shore. We were getting reports of gusts to 25 knots so I decided to sail in a softer mode which I hoped would be sufficient for the mile record without endangering the boat. I was going to set the wing at 15 degrees with the main flap pulled on.

David Coulthard made an ill-advised comment not long before he retired following a stellar career last year. The comment, though ill-advised, has however has turned out to be rather accurate.
