Teams of racers, not manufacturers using the sport as a promotional aid, are the future of the sport

On a sunny Saturday in July 1977, 26 formula one cars lined up on the grid for the British grand prix at Silverstone. There were 15 different makes of car represented, powered by five different types of engine, 15 of them were Ford-Cosworths. The race had originally attracted 36 entries and they had to be whittled down to 30 who would be allowed to attempt to qualify by the harsh process of pre-qualifying on Thursday morning. In February the worldwide FMX scene was shocked after the tragically death of Jeremy Lusk. He succumbed to his injuries, which he got from a hard crash at the X Knights San Jose/Costa Rica. The probably best FMX athlete last year was nominated for the FMX Awards in the two categories “Best International FMX Rider” and “Best Trick Innovation”. In both sections the users honored his incredible performance in 2008 and his lifetime achievement.

SANTA CRUZ — The city bike park has been launched to a new spot.

In a move anticipated for several years, paving the way for the planned Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center, the bike park has been disassembled over the past few days and will reopen late next month in nearby Depot Park.

And though the new facility will be a bit smaller, the ramps and jumps will be better for the BMX style riders who use them, parks Superintendent Steve Hammack said.

The curious craft with its 10-foot wingspread looks like a sleek jet plane, not what it really is: a small submarine capable of flying deep beneath the ocean’s surface to survey whatever’s there.

And that’s just what it will do next month when scientists and conservationists from California’s national marine sanctuaries take it underwater in Monterey Bay and start tracking everything that’s living there, from whales to tiny krill.

The newly designed, battery-powered submarine is only 20 feet long and is built to carry two people to depths of 1,500 feet as they cruise at a sedate 7 mph.
