It is a story that has been repeated many times: A car company is founded by a larger-than-life visionary with unconventional ideas. It goes on to create remarkable vehicles.

This story can have many different endings. Some of the plucky startups, like Ferrari and Honda, endure, and their cars become the stuff of legend. Many more – Bricklin and DeLorean, for example – drop out of sight before gaining a commercial foothold.

Among the failures is one of the most fascinating chapters of American automotive history, the story of Preston Tucker and his attempt to break into a market dominated by Detroit’s Big Three in the years …  Details

crf250rDid the Best Just Get Better?

There’s no two ways around it. I’m a road racer. I’ve always dreamed of being an uber-fast motocross rider, throwing flat whips and having great style and speed (if I could only ride a dirt bike like I can a street bike)… But it’s just not in the cards. At least not with as little as I ride off-road these days. It’s been a good seven or eight months since I’ve purposely taken flight on anything with two wheels, thus when I realized I had to fill in for our normal moto guys at the 2010 Honda CRF250R press intro, let’s say I was a tad gun shy. That was until I actually rode the bike: Flat-out couldn’t have picked a better machine to make my sudo-MX comeback on. But while it’s all good that my slow self got back to riding and liked the Honda, we brought our hired gun, former professional-level SX rider Matty Armstrong to really put it through the paces and breakdown how the CRF250 performs in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing. And while I typically don’t give this away up front, what the heck… The verdict: “Best 250F I’ve ever ridden!” were some of the first words out of his mouth after only a few laps on the new Honda. And it just kept getting better…   Details & Pictures

He wanted it! He got it! The Eastbound North Atlantic sailing record has fallen! Pascal Bidégorry, skipper of the enormous maxi-trimaran Banque Populaire V, is now not only the fastest man under sail over 24 hours, covering an amazing 907.9 miles, he has also become the fastest man across the pond, smashing Groupama 3’s previous sailing record by a whopping 12 hours 32 minutes and 6 seconds.

It took Pascal and his 11 crew a mere 3 days 15 hours 25 minutes and 48 seconds to rocket from Ambrose Lighthouse to Lizard Point, averaging 32.94 knots. You simply can’t compare this with Eric Tabarly’s record back in 1980, though it was a true exploit back then, when he crossed the North Atlantic in 10d5h14m20s, averaging 12.15 knots onboard his Paul Ricard.

It all started on Wednesday, when Franck Cammas and his 9 crew members passed the line at the Ambrose Lighthouse off New York at exactly 20:12:16 UTC onboard his record breaking trimaran Groupama 3, hitting 30 knots straightaway. Pascal Bidégorry crossed the line 2h 35m26s later, at 22:47:42 UTC, quickly gaining speeds of over 35 knots. Then the fight began for 22 heroes aboard those two magnificent high performance maxi-trimarans…  Details and Excellent Pictures

What is going on with surfing this past week? From Cali to Costa Rica and home again, it has been all thrills. It may not have been the “best week ever.” But, after a week of daily surf in Galveston, who could complain?

First, Brett Simpson wins the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing. The local Huntington favorite turned heads for trumping World Champion and world-class athlete, Mick Fanning. Australia has maintained their reputation as the Oz of great surf and even greater surfers. American surfers made a mark placing more times than AUS, BRA, or PYF. Sunday, thus, brought a new-founded context to the phrase “land down under.”

Spoke too soon? Although Cali brought the competition…  Details
