windsurf-dayOn August 16th, 2009 the World is invited to share the magic of windsurfing with their friends and family. A concept that has been started by the innovators at Starboard; ‘World Windsurfing Day is designed to introduce new blood to the sport.

This year, the programme is intended to be a small-scale event. The concept is based on the fact that most windsurfers in the world are introduced to the sport by their family, and without that critical first introduction many people would not have started.

The simple measurement rules for the 33rd America’s cup have been published ahead of the New York Supreme Court hearing on 10 August to consider the Customs House Registry issue.

Societe Nautqiue de Geneve has defined a set of seven measurement rules for the Deed of Gift event.

In an accompanying letter, SNG officials state:

‘The purpose of the measurement will be to confirm that the dimensions of GGYC challenging vessel are the same as the dimensions certified by you, yourself as Commodore, in the Certificate of name, ownership, rig and specified dimensions, which was attached to your notice of challenge dated July 11, 2007…

 

…  At first blush the rules appear to be quite standard, however as with everything in this America’s cup there is a sting in the tail with the boats to be measured with crew aboard, to be in ‘load’ condition.

Normally waterlines are measured with all sailing gear aboard, and with the crew weighed separately, off the boat, if there is a weight restriction.

The rules sting could work against BMW Oracle Racing, at this stage, as they do not have a motor on their trimaran BOR90 to power winches, and instead carry an extra eight grinders – or close to a tonne of live weight…  Details

The third stop on the USA Cycling Pro Gravity Tour (Pro GRT) is set to get underway this weekend. Slated for August 7-9 in Snowmass Village, Colo., “Blast the Mass” will feature both downhill and four-cross competitions that factor into the overall Pro GRT rankings.

With five of the eight series races in the books, Chris Boice (Albuquerque, NM/Yeti/Fox)and Darian Harvey (Durango, Colo./Cannondale) currently lead the men’s and women’s standings with 150 and 160 points respectively. The Pro GRT four-cross event in Snowmass will take place on Saturday, Aug. 8 while the downhill portion is scheduled for Sunday on a course with 600+ feet of vertical.

In addition to being part of the Pro GRT, “Blast the Mass” also features cross-country and Super D competitions. The three-day event will serve as the Colorado State Mountain Bike Championships, the fifth stop on the Mountain States Cup Calendar, and the sixth stop on the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Gravity Calendar.

Among several other notable riders, Lance Armstrong is scheduled to contest  the pro cross-country event on Saturday.
