Surfing has always had its fiercely local breaks. It seems localism, where local surfers intimidate visiting surfers to discourage them from surfing “their” waves, doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. The latest example occurred in Streaky Bay in South Australia when a local group called the The Mid West Coast Surfriders Association put a halt to a proposed Big Wave World Tour event at a relatively new big wave spot called Yanerbie Bombie. PARK CITY, Utah — On a snow-covered mountain near Lake Tahoe last May, Olympic snowboarder Elena Hight suddenly found herself very uncovered.

Hight steeled her nerves with a board, but sans clothes, during a photo shoot for ESPN The Magazine’s “Body Issue.”

The two-time Olympian who finished sixth during the halfpipe at the 2006 Games in Torino, Italy, continued her run as a pioneer — minus the snow pants.
