Spring at Lake Tahoe means some of the best sunshine-stoked Sierra skiing, telemark skiing and snowboarding at any of the region’s famed resorts.

Mount Hood ski areas report a layer of fresh powdery snow has made for great skiing conditions on this last day of spring break.

A survey of ski areas and skiing conditions on the mountain:

• Mt. Hood Meadows www.skihood.com got the most snow, with 24 inches accumulating since Saturday morning, bringing the snowpack to 160 inches in the base area. With temperatures dropping to the low teens early this morning, the snow remains in good shape for skiing.

About 38 windsurfers and six kitesurfers took full advantage of yesterday’s blustery Wellington morning for their annual “Harbour Blast” race around Matiu/Somes Island.

It was the first time in the history of the decades-old race that kitesurfers had taken part – though they had to start later than their water-bound colleagues for safety reasons.

Race officer Bob Zuur, of Wellington Windsurfing Association, said racers took off from Hikoikoi reserve in Petone about 11am and finished at Eastbourne some 25 minutes later… Details

 It didn’t take long for Dale Earnhardt Jr. to find trouble Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.

He was reminded of it often, too — like every time he shifted gears in his No. 88 Chevrolet. From Lap 43 on in the 500-lap Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500, Earnhardt’s shifter was held together by a bungee cord.
