The ASP WQS 6-Star Estoril Quiksilver Pro 2009 moved closer to its business today as Guincho’s consistent beachbreak delivered some excellent three foot (one meter) waves allowing organisers to wrap up Round 3 and six heats of Round 4, event outsiders creating major upsets for an exciting day of world class surfing. While current ASP Top 45 surfers Tiago Pires (Ericeira, PRT) and Michael Picon (Capbreton, FRA) suffered early eliminations, ASP WQS rising campaigners stole the show to advance through to the first Man-on-man heats of the event planned to kick off tomorrow at Carcavelos, main location of the Estoril Quiksilver Pro.

Due to organizational problems we need to postpone the Mauritius event until further notice.

One of the main issues was that the national flight company has dramatically reduced their flights and we can not guarantee shipping of all equipment in time.

We tried to arrange alternative boat transfers but it was impossible to get a guarantee for proper timing. We are still working on it and the event will definately happen in the future.

The first day of the event started of with the usual registration for  all who wants to participate,  85 windsurfer from Bonaire, Curacao, U.S, Holland  in total registered from: Rookies, Junior, Sports, Women and Open Men.  On that same day we had a quick skippers  meeting plus a welcome speech from the organizers and the day ended with free beers and a small party as the wind prediction was good for the next day.. so everyone was truly looking forward  for the next day racing and went early to bed.

At my first visit to Talladega, a veteran driver told me that qualifying at the 2.66-mile track would be the easiest thing I would ever do in a racecar. Then he told me that the racing there might be the most difficult. Over the next 13 years, I found that he was correct.

Qualifying at Talladega is simple. It requires leaving pit road in first gear, shifting three times, maintaining full throttle and not braking until you’ve completed your two laps and are heading for pit road. Really, the only way a driver could fail would be forgetting to steer. It’s almost that easy.
