Retired cycling strongman and former USA Cycling national team rider Steve Larson passed away on Tuesday evening following his collapse during a running workout. Larsen, 39, died of an apparent heart attack near his home in Bend, Oregon. A cycling icon, Larsen contested world championships across the disciplines of road, track, mountain bike and cyclo-cross.

We would like to express our condolences to the Larsen family and to all of the many lives he touched in and around the sport of cycling,” stated USA Cycling CEO Steve Johnson. “Steve had an incredibly diverse career, making remarkable contributions to both cycling and triathlon; and his impact will not be forgotten.”

Larsen raced extensively with the USA Cycling national team program in the late 1980s. Moving to the legendary Motorola professional road cycling team in the 1990s, Larsen contested the Giro d’Italia and other major racing events, while also earning a national championship on the road. He also became a dominant force in mountain bike racing in the 1990s winning cross country titles in 1998 and 2000.

Held in high regard by the cycling industry, Larsen leaves a wife, Carrie, and five children.

Jeff Gordon found himself thinking about his back instead of his car. After hours of agony behind the wheel at Bristol Motor Speedway in March, Gordon wondered how much longer he could fight the pain.

“If my back was the way it was at Bristol this year, it’s definitely going to shorten my career,” Gordon said Thursday. “I can’t race like that.”

The Sprint Cup points leader began a series of tests, which revealed minor arthritis and other issues. That led to a procedure on Monday that called for an injection of lidocaine or anti-inflammatory medication…  Details

Everything’s coming up roses for Stewart-Haas Racing.

Five days after owner/driver Tony Stewart won the Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, his teammate, Ryan Newman, ripped off a pole-winning run for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at the 1.5-mile track.

Newman turned a lap in 28.651 seconds (188.475 mph) Thursday to earn the top starting spot for the 600-miler, NASCAR’s longest race. Kyle Busch (188.258 mph) made a concerted attempt to unseat Newman, who gave Stewart-Haas its first Sprint Cup pole, but fell just short after a slight mistake getting into Turn 3…  Details
