Alex de Angelis became the first motorcycle rider to break the 200 mph barrier at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The San Marino resident joined Tom Sneva as Indy racers who were first to reach that speed. Sneva did it on four wheels, though, touching 200 mph in qualifying for the 1977 Indy 500.

De Angelis hit 200 three different times Sunday going through the speed trap near the start-finish line. His record time was a 201.3 on lap 19. But the 25-year-old was more satisfied with his runner-up finish to Spain’s Jorge Lorenzo—his first podium finish in the series.

Jorge Lorenzo capitalised on a miserable day for his closest title rivals as he took victory in the Indianapolis MotoGP race.

The Fiat Yamaha rider took his third win of 2009 with his team-mate Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa both crashing in the 28-lap race at Brickyard.

Lorenzo won by 9.5seconds to halve Rossi’s championship lead with five races left to go as the Italian failed to finish for the first time this year…  Details

American Nicky Hayden hopes to end his season-long slump in Sunday’s Indianapolis MotoGP.

Hayden qualified sixth Saturday for his fourth top-10 start of the season, all coming in the last five races. The 2006 former world champion is 14th in points this season and hasn’t finished better than fifth, but his solid qualifying effort could lead to a strong effort near his hometown of Owensboro, Ky.

“I’m not going to make any big predictions or nothing,” he said. “There’s a few guys in that front group that are certainly quick, but you know, in racing, anything can happen.”
