Forty years ago, power boats racing the waters of Roanoke Rapids Lake was a common sight. In just 4 months they will be back on the water for two days of inboard and outboard American Power Boat Association racing. The event will be held June 27 and 28, said Christina Gordon, eco-heritage tourism manager for the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau.Â

The National Sand Drag Association wants to schedule races west of San Jacinto, but the site’s proximity to potential habitat-conservation areas complicates the permitting process.
