Thursday’s announcement that General Motors might file for bankruptcy protection has NASCAR’s Chevrolet drivers hoping it doesn’t come to that, more for consumers and the economy than themselves.

The automaker, which has already received billions in government assistance, said auditors’ no-confidence vote forced it to seek waivers from creditors on loan agreements and could affect suppliers’ ability to seek loans. Chris Dyson will be returning to the 24 Hours of Le Mans driving the #25 RML LMP2 Mazda Lola Coupe in the June 13th and 14th classic sports car race. Dyson is no stranger to the great endurance race having driven a Dome-Judd at the 2004 race with reigning FIA Sportscar champion Jan Lammers and finishing seventh, the highest-placed American.

In preparation for the 77th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on the Circuit de la Sarthe, Dyson will be participating this weekend in the official ACO test at the Circuit Paul Ricard at Le Castellet in southern France…  Details

Kyle Busch has talked about one day driving a Formula One car.

Today at Atlanta Motor Speedway he discussed what it is about F1 that appeals to him.

“I think the part of F1 that appeals to me the most is just the worldwide exposure,” he said. Being able to race in different parts of the world like Monaco, Silverstone … and just going around to all the different areas and seeing what it’s all about.”…

DETROIT’S automakers have long defended their racing expenditures with a simple axiom: Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday.

But in at least one form of competition, this often-costly formula may be turning upside down, with automakers producing and selling limited editions intended solely for track use; the cars cannot be registered for road use. Essentially, they are moving the cars raced on Sundays from the expense side of the ledger to the income side.

The low production volume will not turn Detroit’s fortunes around. Still, when Ford built a run of 50 2008 Cobra Jet Mustangs specifically for drag racing, the program was successful on at least two levels. Not only did the cars sell out quickly at $69,900 each — Ford emphasized that it made a profit on each — but one went on to win its first race, taking Stock Eliminator honors at the National Hot Rod Association Winternationals here last month.

Dodge, another veteran of the ’60s horsepower wars, is also in the game with its Drag Pak program from Mopar…  Details
