As a longtime wakeboarder, Shawn Kjolso of Lynnwood already had a love of water sports. But after years of spending time and money to maintain his boat, he was ready to try something different.

He was ready to try kiteboarding.

It meant swapping his speedboat for a large, colorful kite that could propel him across the water, and sometimes lift him soaring above the waves. It meant trading the noise of a powerful outboard motor for, well, no noise.

“Now I’m relying on Mother Nature to pull me around,” the 37-year-old Kjolso said. “It’s peaceful and it’s quiet. The only noise is the wind blowing by you.”  …  Details

LEADERBRAND Wainui Surf Lifesaving Club is launching a “public subscription” to raise funds for a new $10,000 surf canoe and to help meet costs associated with maintaining its key rescue craft – the IRBs.

The club needs to replace a canoe damaged beyond repair during last month’s national championships in Gisborne and also ensure its IRBs are kept in top order.

“Wainui is a very challenging beach at times and the IRBs we run cost thousands of dollars a season to operate effectively,” said appeal organiser Murray Robertson.

(ASMC) announced today that the company presented “Tonight Show” host and long-time motorcycle enthusiast Jay Leno with one of the first 2009 Suzuki GSX-R1000 models off the production line. The presentation was held on Friday, April 10, 2009, at Leno’s famed Big Dog Garage in Burbank, Calif.

According to ASMC, the presentation is intended as a “thank you” to Leno, for his years of supporting the motorcycle industry and for bringing mainstream awareness to the motorcycle industry.

Before the week started, I was talking with the founder of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, Chris Pook, about the history of the race.  He said that when Mario Andretti won the race in 1977, that’s when things really took off.  He said it was the personality that got people excited and had the grandstands full.

That driver swagger and personality was on display all weekend in the Long Beach Sports Arena press conference room.

The celebrities warmed up the podium for the weekend after Al Unser Jr and Keanu Reeves rode to victory in Pro/Celebrity Race.  Helio Castroneves and Team Penske reconvened in Long Beach and of course, the winner and top finishers after the race on Sunday…  Details
