After the war of attrition that was Sebring, we don’t expect to see many happy faces after the 200 mile hike north to Gainesville Raceway — home of the NHRA’s Gatornationals. Suprisingly, wide smiles and blaring car stereos greet us when we pull in for the second half of One Lap’s most grueling day so far.

First up the tech and safety inspection.  Then Gainesville Raceway’s Dan Robertson — looking like a tall Johnny Cash in his dark black cowboy hat — gives interested drivers a quick primer on the basics of drag racing. He covers everything from where to line up, how to stage, and what to do when the light goes green. The event is presented by the Gulf Coast Kayak Fishing Association along with help from a number of sponsors including Hobie, Hooters, and Academy Sports.

The GCKFA is a non-profit organization focused on promoting kayak fishing throughout Northwest Florida and South Alabama. The association has a number of activities and events each year including tournaments, rigging workshops, social gatherings, and fishing trips.

The entry fee of $50 per angler will include entry into both the inshore and offshore categories and a Hobie Captains Bag for the first 75 anglers…  Details

NEW PORT RICHEY – More than 100 boats with a total value of over $2 million will be the centerpiece of the Cotee River Seafood Festival and Bright House Networks Boat Show on Friday through Sunday.

But that – and lots of seafood – is the just beginning of the increasingly popular late springtime festival in and around Sims Park.
