One of the highlights of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance weekend — and, in fact, one of the highlights in all of motor sports — are the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races. It’s the reason that most people schlep through Ferrari-laden traffic jams on the peninsula this time of year. Well, that and the Quail event.
Few events offer the kind of opportunity to see classic competition-prepped race cars compete like the Monterey races do. Started in 1974, the races bring cars and drivers from around the world to show off on the storied tarmac of Laguna Seca Raceway. It’s an amateur event, so anyone with a classic racer can join in with the likes of industry giant Vic Edelbrock Jr., Timo Glock, Mario Andretti and Stirling Moss around the famed “Corkscrew” turns on the track.

Surfers are notorious for jealously guarding their favorite spots, and the latest turf war is at the Huntington Beach Pier, where fishing lines and surfers are competing for the same slice of ocean, it was reported today.
“When you’re catching a wave, those fishing lines are like a spider web … it’s kind of like you’re dodging it,” 23-year-old Huntington Beach resident Stephen Stemmer told the Orange County Register. “And next thing you know you’re caught up in a line.”
Stemmer said that some surfers have been hooked in the leg or foot and have had lines wrapped around their necks, and has asked the city to toss the fishermen out … Details
Dodge’s president and CEO said Sunday that while his company has no plans to expand its participation, it is committed to remaining in stock car racing.
“We intend to remain in NASCAR for the foreseeable future,’’ Mike Accavitti told a group of reporters before Sunday’s Carfax 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Dodge, emerging from bankruptcy protection, works with Richard Petty Motorsports and Penske Racing, which field seven Sprint Cup teams. The company once provided support to about twice that many.
Accavitti said Dodge tried backing more teams in the past, but it spread resources too thin. At its current level of support, Dodge has two drivers – Kurt Busch and Kasey Kahne – in solid contention to make NASCAR’s 10-race playoff Chase … Details
