When Joel incorrectly surfed the outside peak on the final day of the Quik pro at Kirra, Luke stood alone at the head of the break wall, in the rain, waving his board and gesticulating wildly for Joel to surf the detonating slabs on the inside. When Joel won Bells, Egan carried him the fifty or so steps to the top of the Bells race. When news of Joel’s ankle injury broke, Egan threw himself on the grenade. And when Joel slumped to his third consecutive 17th, it was Egan who sat around with his charger crushing cans and listening to his ruminations.
