Volunteers help 35 people with disabilities have a day of fun at Wrightsville Beach
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH It had been a long time since Will Archibald tasted salt water – much less had it go up his nose and in his eyes, and submerge his head.
All that salt put a big grin on his face Saturday, when he had a rare chance to surf the 4- to 6-foot waves crashing onto the northern stretch of Wrightsville Beach.
Archibald, 28, has been paralyzed from the chest down since a motorcycle accident in May 2009 in Cape Cod, Mass.

As he held a huge chalice and $75,000 check for his Maloof Money Cup win, it was hard to contend anyone has had a better two weeks than pro skateboarder Pierre-Luc Gagnon.
Last weekend, he stood in front of cameras with X Games gold around his neck for best trick and vert skateboarding.
“Amazing two weeks,” Gagnon said. “It’s been a lot of work, but it’s been fun too. I’m speechless.”

Carissa Moore (Honolulu, HI), 17, won the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Women’s US Open of Surfing presented by Hurley and Nike 6.0 in a wave-starved heat over Sally Fitzgibbons(AUS), 19, at South Huntington Beach Pier to take out $50,000, the richest first place prize purse in women’s surfing history. Sage Erickson (Ventura, CA), 19, also donated a standout performance today when she claimed the ASP Grade-2 Pro Junior in a stacked Final.
Quarter Finalist were also decided in Men’s ASP Prime event while Finalists were determined for the Men’s ASP Grade-2 Pro Junior.
