Gorham, NH – (September 9, 2010) – The 149-year-old Mt. Washington Auto Road has seen the likes of horses and carriages, camels, people, bicycles and most famously, competition race cars. Yesterday, traveling at an average speed of nearly 72 miles per hour in a Vermont SportsCar prepared, BFGoodrich Tires-shod 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car, four-time Rally America National Champion Travis Pastrana made sure the project name, Red Bull Speed Chasers, lived up to its name. The 2010 USA Cycling Professional Mountain Bike Gravity Tour (Pro GRT) will wrap up this weekend at Whiteface Mountain Bike Park in Lake Placid, New York.
The Whiteface Mountain Bike Park 5K Downhill will take place on September 12 and feature new trail selections on a five-kilometer course that can be described as fast and flowing with technical sections throughout.
As the fifth international-grade downhill event on USA Cycling’s Pro GRT, Whiteface will wrap up the season-long points competition.
Heading into the finale, Bryn Atkinson (AUS/Transition Racing) has a steady lead in the men’s competition with 205 points compared to the 130 his nearest threat, Andrew Neethling (RSA/Trek World Racing), has accumulated. In the women’s contest, Jill Kintner (Seattle, Wash./Transition Bikes) is in the lead with 275 points while fellow American Melissa Buhl (Chandler, Ariz./KHS Bikes) is in second with 110.
