Barra di Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro – The young surfer from the Southern State of Parana, Caetano Vargas, 23, took the first of the two titles played this week in Barra da Tijuca. He was the champion of the SuperSurf Internacional 2010, winning a new Peugeot Pickup Truck, the prize for best surfer in the four contests of the circuit run by Editora Abril.

The confirmation came in the defeat of Bernardo Miranda for Odirlei Coutinho on the round of 16. But the ASP South American champion will only be known on the last day. The leader Raoni Monteiro lost on Friday, but may still be the first two times winner of the ASP South America if Willian Cardoso doesn’t make the finals on Saturday of the grade 6 ASP World Star at Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.

The USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships kicked off on Friday as coeds from around the nation gathered at the Northstar at Tahoe Resort to begin their quests for the 22 national titles up for grabs over the weekend.

The first day of racing saw the student-athletes battle it out for individual titles in the cross country competitions.

In the Division I men’s contest, Rotem Ishay (Fort Lewis College) successfully defended his title from a year ago. Although the Israeli National led the race in its entirety, he consistently found himself fighting off attacks from Lees-Mcrae rider Brad Perley, California Polytech rider Menso Dejong, and Colorado State’s Nicholas Enjalbert. The men went for four laps of the 6.5-mile course for a total of 26 miles. Ishay completed the test in two hours and nine minutes, four minutes and 45 seconds ahead of Enjalbert who claimed the silver medal. Biketoberfest is set to roll into Daytona Beach, with an estimated 150,000 motorcyclists arriving in Central Florida for the four-day event.
