A group of big-wave fans now known as the Half Moon Bay Surfers Group appears to have taken control of the Mavericks surf contest. The San Mateo County Harbor District voted Wednesday night to give the group the only permit to hold a contest this season.
The vote constituted a rebuke to the contest’s past sponsor, Mavericks Surf Ventures. MSV CEO Keir Beadling was also at the meeting and had been pursuing the permit as well.
