On June 10 Joseph Holway set off on his bike from New York. On July 1, he hit the West Coast. His mission was to deliver a bike jersey from the Search and State sewing room in the Garment District of Manhattan to Golden Saddle Cyclery in Los Angeles, a solo cross-country ride of more than 3,000 miles. The jersey, which was made in New York, was the first of its kind, so Search and State wanted to make sure it got taken care of. They decided to run a contest to find a bike messenger.
