Injuries and tears abound, but the show goes on
There was carnage today at the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach. Nikki Van Dijk head-butted both her board and the reef. Courtney Conlogue withdrew due to injury and Pauline Ado received 11 stitches. Van Dijk was the first casualty of the morning, when her board was picked up by the wind and head-butted her during the early-morning freesurf. “It’s been a crazy morning,” she told the ASP’s Rosy Hodge. “The wind blew my board and hit me in the face, I was, like, ‘Stop it.’” The rookie Australian exited the water with a fresh black eye and a swollen side of her face.
