The field has now been whittled down to 12 surfers after Round 3 of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast on Monday in Australia. The 12 heats, which were contended amid awesome waves, saw controversy, upsets, and incredible surfing. Here are the five main talking points.

Kelly Slater means business The 42-year-old, surfing on a more traditional tri fin, burst out of the blocks with a 9-point ride and never looked like he would lose his heat against Portugal’s Tiago Pires.
