Ryan Villopoto’s incredible second half in this year’s Monster Energy Supercross Series propelled him to his third-straight championship title. He’s just the fourth racer in Supercross history to earn three titles. While Villopoto was certainly a favorite coming into this year after back-to-back Supercross titles, he stumbled early in the season, and was playing catch-up to Davi Millsaps, who proved to be this season’s biggest surprise. Millsaps held the series lead for the first 10 races, proving he’s a force to be reckoned with. But once Villopoto caught fire at the midway point of the season, it seemed only a matter of time before the gap would be closed. And sure enough, he passed Millsaps at stop No. 10 in Daytona Beach, Florida, and never looked back. Millsaps and Ryan Dungey, a former Monster Energy Supercross champion, continued to nip at Villopoto’s heels, but now that Villopoto has secured the championship, they’ll be in a fierce battle for second place overall during this weekend’s finale in Las Vegas.
