THESE DAYS Nick Newcomb, 20, races for the Mike’s Bikes cycling team, competing nearly every weekend for either the Marin-based squad or for his UC Santa Cruz team, of which he’s also the president. But, when he first decided to try cycling during his days as a student at Drake High, his mom joked that he was “one of those kids who showed up in baggy shorts, on an old bike.”
