About an hour before Friday’s qualifying round, shortly before driver David Gilliland strapped into his No. 71 Chevrolet, conspicuous by the blank space on the blue car’s hood where a sponsor’s logo belongs, upstart team owner Kevin Buckler arrived at the TRG Motorsports hauler at Texas Motor Speedway.
Inside the outfitted 18-wheeler, the team’s race-week headquarters, Buckler touted his team’s modest successes through six races on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit and its loftier goals, while scraping by.
