Mexico is beefing up security involving the 62nd Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race, according to federal, state and local authorities.

‘We know there’s violence in some places, but it’s not spread all around the country,’ Carlos Rodríguez y Quezada, a consul of Mexico based in Santa Ana, was quoted in the Daily Pilot of Costa Mesa. ‘People have asked for more arrangements to be more safe,’ and he said such measures have been taken.

The race, organized since 1948 by the Newport Ocean Sailing Association (NOSA), will start April 24 off Newport Beach. But the undercurrent of concern is not about sailing to Ensenada 60 miles below the border but for families and friends of competitors who would drive there…  Details
