THE STAGE: Three decades and counting
“When Fred Hemmings first started the [Triple Crown] series back in 1983, we had a total purse of about $30,000,” Executive Director Randy Rarick remembers. “In 30 years, it’s grown to over $1,000,000. Back then, we dreamed of making surfing legitimate and a way for a surfer to make a living as a professional athlete; I think we’ve come a long way in legitimizing pro surfing on the North Shore.”
