BMX competition drives dental professor ‘Papa Wahl’

By day, Jim Wahl teaches first-year dental students the basic science of teeth.

At night, he demonstrates how to break them.

Wahl is an associate professor of oral biology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry. He also is a BMX racing nut, a 43-year-old kid at heart who the youngsters call “Papa Wahl.”

“I just never found anything more interesting to do,” said Wahl, who’s been hooked on BMX since he was 9 years old. “I was drawn to individual sports as a kid because when I lose, it’s my own damn fault.”    …   More
