YORK, Maine — More than 50 surfers at Long Sands Beach took to the waves Sunday morning for the fifth annual Big Andrew Surf Competition.

Started in memory of surfer Andrew Gmelch, who died at age 15 in 2007 after battling leukemia, organizers and brothers Ryan and Ian Knowles said rain or shine, the event honoring their late best friend would go on.

Funds raised by the competition were to be donated to patient care through York Oncology.

“We prefer it to be nicer weather with more people on the beach,” Ian Knowles said Sunday morning. “But the show must go on.”    …  More
