The official waiting period closes today on the Maverick’s big-wave surf contest, but it isn’t quite dead yet. Officials have been granted an extension through April 8 by the San Mateo County Harbor District, with hopes of stretching the window through the entire month of April.
Not that the surfers are terribly optimistic. “I have never seen so few 15-foot-plus days in the December-to-March stretch in the 18 years I’ve been surfing Maverick’s,” San Francisco’s Grant Washburn said. “It’s just the worst season I can remember.”… Details
