SANTA CRUZ — The waves haven’t been as kind to Santa Cruz Surf Kayak Festival competitors as it was at last year’s event, but that hasn’t stopped more than 100 kayakers, wave skiers and — for the first time — stand-up paddle boarders from taking over Steamer Lane this weekend for the three-day event.

Participants fought through ankle- to knee-high waves and blustery weather Saturday to qualify for today’s final rounds at the 23rd annual festival, which is considered the largest surf kayak competition in the world.

The contests draws surf kayakers from all around the world. Chris Harvey of Guerns, England, who won the World Cup division last year, called it one of ….  Details
