Enough clothing to dress a child, three shoes, a car tyre and cutlery are in the bags of rubbish collected at Haulashore Island by Nelson’s Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club as part of a big community effort to clear coastal rubbish.
Member Pete Bywater said 11 members took two waka over to the island at 6pm on Friday to pick up rubbish as part of the Tasman Bay Big Beach Cleanup.
Some 800 volunteers continued with the coastal tidy-up on Saturday – clearing 10.46 tonnes of rubbish from 291 kilometres of coast between Abel Tasman National Park and Cable Bay and from the banks of five waterways … Details
