He had the right accoutrements: the Giro helmet, the warm sweatshirt, the puffy gloves and the trendy ski pants. And he had the right slightly-nihilistic attitude: He refused the helmet until his instructors talked him into it.

The only thing different about Samudio was his legs.

He just had one of them – the left one. The other leg was amputated below the knee after his Humvee was hit by a grenade Dec. 1, 2008, in Western Baghdad.
