Ten years ago this month, Audi debuted the R8 race car at Sebring International Raceway. It was a departure for Audi, which had never had a true sports car to race, but the brand-new model finished third.
Since then, Audi has won eight of 10 races, and is the favorite at the 2009 12 Hours of Sebring, a week from today.
Traditionally, when a company races a sports car, it’s to help advertise a sports car they build and sell to the public. That’s essentially the philosophy behind all the racing that Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini and Aston-Martin do.
