The Whitey Harrison Classic outrigger canoe race embarks Saturday on a 20-mile round trip between Dana Point and Laguna Beach, pitting teams from all over California.
The Dana Outrigger Canoe Club hosts and competes in the annual event, named after Lorrin “Whitey” Harrison, a well-known local surfer and canoe maker who founded the club in 1972. The race was established in 1971 as part of opening ceremonies for Dana Point Harbor and originally started in Newport Beach, according to the canoe club.
