World Rally Championship leader Sebastian Loeb of France slid into a bridge on the fourth of nine stages on the opening day of Rally New Zealand, ending Friday 1 minute, 19.8 seconds off the lead held by Norway’s Petter Solberg.
Six-time world champion Loeb, who won the past three rounds of the championship, approached a right-hand corner too fast on the 22.2km stage in Northland province and slammed sideways into a bridge abutment.
