In 1960, John Severson founded Surfer magazine, an annual publication that was, essentially, a labor of love. He invested $3,000 to print 10,000 copies of the photo-filled booklet, designed with a card-stock cover and content that included a guide to Southern California surf spots.
“When it came right down to it, I wasn’t sure I’d sell more than 100,†said Severson by phone from his home in Maui.
