With spots for local surfers in the O’Neill Cold Water Classic a premium this year, Santa Cruz’s Tyler Smith and Bud Freitas made the most of tricky conditions Monday morning at Steamer Lane to earn chances to compete in the main event.
Both enjoyed a couple hours in the main draw before each was bounced in the Round of 128 during the afternoon heats.
