Central Oregon’s slice of Hawaii is colorful. Bend Oregon Outrigger includes nearly 50 members who bring a centuries-old Polynesian sport to an unlikely location — an inland high-desert town.
The core group of competitive paddlers — about half of the club’s membership — trains twice a week for races throughout the Pacific Northwest, California, Hawaii and Canada. The local paddle-sport club was founded in the early 1990s by Bend residents Meg Chun and Leslie Blok, who formed a women’s team.
