Britain’s Steve Peat ended a decade of frustrating near-misses by winning the men’s downhill title on the final day at the world mountainbike championships in Canberra.
The 35-year-old, who had finished runner-up four times since 2000, snatched the gold by 0.05 seconds from South African Greg Minnaar in front of an estimated crowd of 40,000.
