The United States was well represented at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Mont-Saint-Anne, Quebec, July 24-25. The top American performance was put on by gravity rider Aaron Gwin (Morongo Valley, Calif./Yeti-Fox Shox) who grabbed the bronze medal in the pro men’s downhill event. The U.S. grabbed another elite medal when Willow Koerber (Asheville, N.C./Subaru-Gary Fisher) scored a fifth-place finish in the women’s cross country contest while fellow American Georgia Gould (Fort Collins, Colo./Luna) finished seventh. Former world champions Jill Kintner (Seattle, Wash./GT) and Melissa Buhl (Chandler, Ariz./KHS) also graced the podium, finishing fourth and fifth respectively in the pro women’s 4X.
The top elite cross country males were Adam Craig (Bend, Ore./Giant) who finished 12th and Todd Wells (Durango, Colo./Specialized) in 15th.
Six fully-USA Cycling-supported juniors participated in the junior cross country race at Mont-Saint-Anne last weekend as the USA Cycling All-Star team. Three riders finished in the top 10 of the junior cross country World Cup contest in Canada, including Zach McDonald (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Classic Cycles) who just missed the podium with a sixth-place effort. Seth Kemp (Campobello, S.C./Carolina Cycles) finished ninth, Eric Emsky (Fall City, Wash./Rad Racing) 10th, Wes Lamberson (Limestone, Tenn./Kenda-MTBAndy) 16th, Brae Patten (Boulder, Colo.) 17th and Russell Finsterwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Front Rangers) 18th against some of the world’s best juniors.
Another group of six USA Cycling-supported U23 riders contested the pro/elite men’s race with Robbie Squire (Sandy Utah) collecting the group’s top finish in 55th.Â
Attention will now turn to Bromont, Quebec where many of the same American riders will look to gather more UCI points in the next round of the World Cup coming up Aug. 1-2.
