Nat Young survived what he called “the hardest heat of my life” on Tuesday, crediting his advancement in the prestigious U.S. Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach to good fortune. On Thursday, the 18-year-old Santa Cruz surfer’s luck ran out.
Two days after prevailing in a heat that featured Damien Hobgood, currently ranked No. 5 in the world, and former world champion Sunny Garcia, Young met his match. He fell in the Round of 48 at the six-star World Qualifying Series event, placing third to Nathan Yeomans and Alain Riou in 2- to 4-foot waves.
