Earlier this month, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced that the northern hemisphere is officially in La Niña and will probably remain so through winter. So what exactly does that mean for surfers?

“El Niño is synonymous with pumping surf along the US West Coast — does La Niña equate to wave famine? Well, not exactly,” Schaler Perry, a Pacific Forecaster for Surfline, tells us. “For a number of reasons, but primarily because not all La Niña or El Niño events are created equal.
