Big-wave surfing pioneer Jeff Clark broke his silence Friday morning, saying “the reality is I was ousted” as director of the Mavericks Surf Contest and announcing that he has severed most ties with the company that runs it.

Mavericks Surf Ventures CEO Keir Beadling announced last week that Clark — who began surfing Mavericks solo as a Half Moon Bay 17-year-old, and continued to do so for 15 years — would be stepping down as director but staying on as member of the company’s board.
