Surfing is a regular part of being a soldier. If they have not yet found it, many U.S. soldiers discover surfing while serving. Troops turn to surfing, and who could blame them? Most military arrive for training on beautiful beaches like Virginia, Cocoa, San Juan, and Coronado. When visiting friends at the outlying Hawaii base years back, I was stoked! Although we brought our own boards to a surf break at Kaneohe Bay, I soon noticed the military encouraging its troops to surf by renting out boards on base.
Surfing is also found when military personnel are overseas. This is evidenced by movies and fashion. In Apocalypse Now, Francis Ford Coppola filmed soldiers surfing Charlie’s Point in the Philippines. From this film came the famous phrase: “Charlie, … Details
