LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN — Skate-boarders are rocketing down the steep and twisting pavement that rolls from Buffalo Bill’s gravesite into Golden this weekend as part of Colorado’s first-ever sanctioned downhill race on a closed road.

“It’s such a relief to be here without any traffic,” said 48-year-old Rick Fitzpatrick, one of 48 athletes racing in the inaugural Buffalo Bill Downhill race on Lookout Mountain Road.

“We can really open it up.”

Swaddled in tattered leather suits and donning Teflon-palmed gloves, the racers screamed down a mile of pavement. They slid their giant, custom-made boards sideways around five hairpin turns and crouched into deep tucks on the few straight sections. They drafted and passed.
